Welcome to my garden blog. Winter months bring winter birds to the garden, spring brings renewal with bright colors and natures wondrous flowers, summer brings perennials that liven up the outdoors, while autumn gives us a harvest of homegrown veggies.

Veggie Garden Clean Up

This is what remained in the garden before clean up. The last of the green beans. It should be enough for Thanksgiving dinner - green bean casserole. Saving the last of the harvest will be a sweet addition to the table that special day.
To wrap up this years garden...things I learned.

  1. plant in rows next year - the 3 sisters method just did not work for my garden.
  2. no watermelon next year. Did not really work in the garden.
  3. larger tomato supports and less tomatoes.
  4. plant cucumbers in the front use better spacing.
  5. use better fertilizer or should I say - fertilize better the garden next year
Next years garden must haves
  1. sugar sweet pumpkins
  2. green beans - stake them better
  3. tomatoes - 1 beefsteak - 1 roma - 1 cherry or grape
  4. corn - buy better seed
  5. cucumbers - 1 plant
  6. zucchini - 1 plant - Mr H says he love zucchini bread! Go figure!
  7. possibly - 1 or 2 cantaloupe
  8. 1 eggplant
  9. potatoes in new potato planter!!!
  10. think about planting gourds somewhere in the garden??
Plant sunflowers in different location - took up too much space and shade in veggie garden - also plant a variety of sunflowers - not just the mammoth
Plant pumpkin on a stick in different location - try to do better with this plant next year now that I understand it's growth.
Stake out herb garden and add more herb plants to current location.

Next for me to think about is planning the floral garden around the perimeter of the house. I have it started with landscaping ideas - as well as some perennials already planted....that post is for another day!!!
