Today's Harvest 8-17-11

Holy cow!!! I had to make two trips from the garden today. I laid everything out on the sun room floor to access what all I had.
4 pumpkins - one may not be viable. I did leave 3 rotten pumpkins in the garden to compost. Note to self....pick these pumpkins as soon as they are orange. I had read where you can leave them on the vine, but this is how I lost some of them. They fell off the vine and rotted. It has been raining here off and on for the past several days and I did not venture up to the garden to pick the pumpkins....HUGE mistake. Take note for next year!!!!
8 ears of corn so far. There were tons of earwig bugs on these corn. Is that why they are called earwigs? They like to be in the ears of corn? I hope that when I schuck these corn ears there are no bugs inside....time will tell cause after this blog, I am going out to peel off the husks.....hopefully there will be corn for dinner....
I thought the cucumbers were done!!! I guess not. The one is so HUGE!!!! I never even saw this guy until today when he was peeking out under neath the leaves of the plant. The other one has a flaw on it, but I guess it will be okay.
Get the tomato pot back out...time to cook off more romas. I got about 2 dozen maters today and there are a bunch that fell to the ground and rotted. Looks like there will be a lot of good compost from the garden to help next years garden!!!!

Edited to add this link for roasting and freezing tomatoes
Roasting and freezing tomatoes....good article!

I love reading your blog, actually your blog is the only one I follow given my limited time. My garden has not done so well this year. I did not spray with chemicals, but use a homemade pepper spray. It works for a few days, but needs to be re-applied often. Been busy and dropped the ball on the spraying, the bugs destroyed my green beans in a few days! The leaves were just lace. The birds (cardinals) have been enjoying my tomatoes. As soon as the tomatoes start to get red I have to pick them and finish ripening inside or the birds get them. My eggplant never had a chance, bugs ate the leaves right off in the beginning. I guess because of the heat, the garden did not do as well this year. My best tomato plant is one that came up by itself along the edge of my driveway, a salad tomato. It is huge and has produced hundreds of tomatoes. My gourd plant is having trouble as well, the gourds start to grow, then they rot and fall off.

I love those little pumpkins you have grown, if I had more room I would like to try growing them myself. Does the flesh of the pumpkin make a good pie?

Thanks Robin for the kind words!
As far as the pumpkin....I have no idea what the pies will taste like as this is the first time I have grown them. I do know this, the pumpkins I grew are sugar sweets and are for pumpkin pies/recipes. We shall find out this fall when I start baking how good they are.
I really dont have an issue with bugs eating my beans as the leaves are healthy and whole....I just dont know why they are not producing....there are flowers but I just never see any green beans.... I don't get it.
